A Day in the Life of a VA: Meet Portia

A day in the life of a virtual assistant is something we’re asked about a lot.  By clients and by those looking at becoming VA’s.  The short answer is no two days are the same, and no two VA’s work the same.  We all have different ways of showing up and balancing our work with our home life.

To give you a behind the scenes glimpse at how we do what we do, each month we’ll be profiling a member of the team.  First up is Portia, one of our newer contractors who set up her own business after losing her job through Covid in March of 2020. She balances being an entrepreneur with contracting to our team, and while Portia’s loving the steep learning curve it’s been a time of adjustment and discipline (both of which she’s done beautifully!).

In the interview below I asked Portia about the challenges of being a virtual assistant.  She talks about why it’s a good fit for her and how being one delivered the life style and professional challenges she’s looking for.

A 'normal' day for Portia looks like this:

5.40am

Wake up! Chuck on my gym gear and rush out the door with my partner and my flatmate.

6.00am

It’s time for CrossFit (has a mental freakout about the workout for the day!)

7.00am

Absolutely wreaked … whole body hurts to move.

7.30am

It’s breakfast & coffee time! Soy flat white please, with a bagel (feta and tomato – delicious)

8.00am

Decides it’s time to move to the shower and get cleaned up for the day! Oh, and make the bed.

9.00am

Makes second coffee for the day! Heads to the office.. Which, takes about 2 minutes (no traffic time here).

9.00 – 10.00am

Checks emails, flags based on importance.

10.00 – 10.30am

Check tasks in ProWorkFlow & Trello and lists them via importance.

10.30 – 12.30pm

It’s all about work.

12.30pm

Lunch time! Leftovers in the microwave, quick sunbath or tv show to break up the day.

1.00 – 3.00pm

Non stop work!

3.15 – 3.30pm

Mmm … a peppermint tea sounds nice with maybe some dark chocolate.

3..30 – 6.30pm

Still a working gal!

6.30pm

Time to switch off and make some dinner.

7.00pm

Din din’s, vegetarian of course.

7.30 – 9.00pm

Binging the 100 TV show.

9.00 – 9.30pm

Quick check of emails, notifications and calendar to check the day ahead.

10.00pm

Light’s out!
